5 Signs a Tree Needs to Be Removed (Not Just Trimmed)

June 25, 20255 min read

Trees are an investment — most homeowners want to save them whenever possible. But sometimes removal is the safer, smarter call. Here are the five biggest warning signs we see in Miami.

1. Major Lean After a Storm

A sudden lean usually means the root plate has shifted. The tree is structurally compromised and may come down at any time.

2. Large Dead Sections in the Canopy

If more than 30% of the canopy is dead, the tree often can't recover and becomes a hazard.

3. Hollow or Decayed Trunk

Mushroom growth at the base, soft spots, or visible cavities mean internal decay. The trunk may not hold up under wind load.

4. Roots Lifting Sidewalks or Foundations

Some invasive root systems cause expensive structural damage. Root pruning may help, but sometimes removal is the only fix.

5. Too Close to the House

Trees planted too close to a home can damage roofs, gutters, and foundations as they mature. Removal early is cheaper than repairs later.
